2017-2018 Project Portfolio Archives
The Senior Design Capstone provides an opportunity for industry and academic sponsors to engage and utilize the minds of some of the brightest students on campus. In the 2017-2018 academic year, the Senior Design Capstone was grateful to be supported by the following sponsors.
Nebraska Department of Transportation Vehicle Crash Data Analysis Cube
Provide the Nebraska Department of Transportation a SQL Server Integration Service (SSIS) package and an Analysis Cube to enable employees to generate crash data reports and display them in a user-friendly manner.

Nebraska Department of Transportation Information Portal
Develop a web-based application that plots all reported motor vehicle crashes dating back to 1988 on a map, and ties additional information to each incident, such as crash severity and conditions in which the incident occurred.

Nebraska Environmental Trust Grants Management
Develop a system to replace the current grant application and management system used by the Nebraska Environmental Trust.

Teammates Mentoring of Lincoln Messenger
Develop TeamMates messenger, a private and monitored communication system to assist in communications and scheduling between students and mentors.

UNL Agpocalypse 2050 INFEWS Game
Create a simulation farming game that aims to find optimum farming strategies by exploring the complex relationship between grain, cattle and ethanol production, limited supplies of water and energy, climate change and the economy.

UNL Animal Science Virtual Training System For Meat Cutting
Develop a tool will help users identify different types and the quality of meat by educating and quizzing the user on various meats in an immersive virtual reality environment.

UNL CSE Cubulonimbus
Create a test bed for the handling and control of the autonomy algorithm for CubeSats.

UNL CSE Exploring Virtual Reality
Develop a complete entertaining virtual reality (VR) experience called "Arachnid Person" that includes physical cues that match the visual ones displayed in the headset of users and enables them to climb walls and buildings as they progress through increasingly difficult levels.

UNL CSE Mobile-Based Food Recognition System
Develop a cross-platform application that enables tracking of meals and activities to promote a healthy lifestyle and decrease obesity rates across the world. The application's GPS detects nearby restaurants and makes food recommendations that best fits the user's diet.

UNL CSE Sound of Code
Develop a program that takes a JavaScript program, parses it, and dynamically plays music corresponding to the execution of the program. This supports new JavaScript developers by providing useful JavaScript tutorials and also a new, fun way to experience any JavaScript program with music.

UNL CSE Unmanned Aerial Systems for Prescribed Fires
Develop an automated course scheduling system for The School of Computing that schedules around various constraints presented by the Department.

UNL Erudite Digital Learning Lab First Steps to Reading Fluency
Develop a Web Graphics Library game hosted on a custom website to support kindergarten students as they learn to read.

UNL Sensi-Plate
Develop a system that electronically measures the amount of food consumed by children and communicates this data to parents, childcare providers, and researchers to determine if a child is receiving the recommended and adequate nutrition from each food group.

WEX Health Ad Hoc Reporting Tool
Develop an Ad Hoc Reporting tool for employers and administrators to generate standard business and accounting reports from the billing and payment platforms.

Westside Community Schools Student Management System
Enhance the Student Management System to improve functionality provided to school Administrators, Teachers and Students, including a scheduling algorithm and system security.

Year In Review
Two Cuts Above: Leadership Through Innovation
Design Studio is the hallmark capstone experience at the Raikes School, setting the standard for interdisciplinary undergraduate education at the University of Nebraska. By combining management, computer science, and design, the program equips students to lead in software and technology innovation. In 2017–2018, 168 students collaborated with 24 sponsors on 29 impactful projects ranging from GIS for clean water to 3D materials engineering. Supported by dedicated faculty, alumni, and volunteer coaches, Design Studio students graduate with a two-year head start in their careers—truly two cuts above.
The School of Computing Senior Design Program held its end-of-year project showcase event on Friday, April 27, 2018.
