Students will develop BoardLink, a secure, mobile-first board meeting and governance platform designed for community banks. The team will build tools for board materials, agendas, voting, approvals, meetings, administration, and secure document access, with opportunities to incorporate AI-assisted summarization, risk and trend identification, draft minutes and action items, and natural-language search. Students will gain hands-on experience with Angular, C#, .NET 10, REST APIs, SQL, PrimeNG, Tailwind CSS, role-based access, multi-factor authentication, cloud-based architecture, security, auditability, and responsive UX/UI while building software for a highly regulated financial environment.

Students will help engineer and prototype The TrapMat, a patent-pending smart floor-management product intended for residential, agricultural, and commercial environments. To protect the sponsor's intellectual property, the public project overview is intentionally high-level; students selected for the project will work across mechanical, electrical, and software components to move the concept toward a functional, manufacturable prototype. The project offers hands-on experience with CAD and engineering design, materials selection, structural and environmental testing, electronics and embedded systems, Progressive Web App development, prototyping, user testing, and manufacturing considerations while contributing to the development of a new commercial product.

Students will transform DMSi's validated pricing model into an intelligent, database-driven platform that helps building-material distributors make faster, more consistent pricing decisions. The team will build a scalable pricing engine, interactive dashboards that explain customer and inventory insights, and an AI agent that can answer natural-language pricing questions and provide real-time recommendations with supporting reasoning. Students will gain hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, SQL, dbt, data modeling and transformation, dashboards and data visualization, AI/LLM agent integration, natural-language interfaces, and real-world ERP data while developing a production-oriented business intelligence solution.

Students will develop a Business Helper App that streamlines and automates production-support processes related to financial spreading and risk calculations, replacing time-consuming manual error triage and resolution workflows. The team will build an interface for organizing and resolving application errors, updating information, auditing changes, and managing access by user role, with opportunities to explore automated alerts and IT service-management integration. Students will gain hands-on experience with Angular, HTML, C#/.NET, APIs, SQL, Azure DevOps, Git, role-based access, auditing, and enterprise application development in a financial-services environment.

Students will gain hands-on experience with UAS and robotics, embedded and flight-control systems, sensors, electrical and mechanical integration, carbon-fiber and additive manufacturing, autonomous systems, software and communications, rapid prototyping, and iterative flight testing.

Students will help advance The Inscribe Application, a cybersecurity platform that enables individuals and small businesses to securely manage and protect sensitive data and intellectual property. The team will move the existing application toward live deployment, enhance the web and desktop UX/UI, develop mobile capabilities, strengthen authentication, and integrate blockchain and advanced encryption technologies for secure file management and digital certificates. Students will gain hands-on experience with Hyperledger Fabric blockchain, post-quantum encryption (ML-KEM and ML-DSA), AES-256, multi-factor authentication, Flutter, full-stack and mobile development, WordPress, Stripe, and APIs, with opportunities to develop specialized workflows for areas such as digital media, healthcare, and financial information.

Building on last year's Senior Design work, the team will complete and refine existing clinical assessment functionality and develop secure community discussion and one-on-one coaching or mentoring capabilities that connect novice nurses with experienced nurse coaches. Students will gain hands-on experience enhancing an existing Progressive Web App, developing secure communication and community features, improving UX/UI, and applying technology to a meaningful healthcare workforce and patient-care challenge.

Students will continue this interdisciplinary Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering project to improve automation, efficiency, and real-time decision-making at McCain Foods' Grand Island manufacturing facility. Building on work from the past two years, the team will automate production data collection, develop real-time dashboards and vision-based software, and work alongside Mechanical Engineering students to integrate robotics and automated material-handling technologies. Students will gain hands-on experience with computer vision, robotics, real-time data analytics and dashboards, industrial automation, Power BI, OSI PI, FactoryTalk, Allen-Bradley systems, and Cognex/Vision camera technology while solving a real-world manufacturing challenge in an active production environment.

ExecuFlex: Turing Biometric Signals into Real-Time Support

Students will develop ExecuFlex, a wearable-integrated extension of Mission Accomplished's existing mobile platform that supports children with executive functioning and self-regulation challenges. The team will build a working prototype that uses real-time biometric data from a commercial wearable to recognize early signs of dysregulation and trigger discreet, context-appropriate prompts or caregiver notifications. Students will gain hands-on experience with wearable SDK/API integration, biometric data processing, rule-based detection algorithms, REST APIs, cloud-hosted services, GitHub, Node.js or Python, and SQL/NoSQL databases while working at the intersection of wearable computing, behavioral science, and digital health.

Students will develop a software verification and validation solution supporting the quality, consistency, and reliability of software used in national defense environments. The project will provide hands-on experience with Python, artificial intelligence, automated code analysis, software testing and validation, CI/CD concepts, APIs, Linux-based development, and multiple programming languages while challenging students to solve a complex, real-world software engineering problem. Because the project supports a government/defense environment, participating students will also gain valuable experience working within heightened security, confidentiality, documentation, and software-quality requirements.

Students will gain experience with modern web development, UX/UI design, APIs, data engineering, SQL/NoSQL databases, Elasticsearch or OpenSearch, and AI/NLP tools, with flexibility to use frameworks such as React, Angular, or Vue and .NET, Node.js, Python, or Java.

Students will transform the Nebraska Strategic Ag Coalition's existing website framework into a functional, one-stop digital resource for Nebraska farmers, ranchers, and agricultural and natural-resource professionals. The team will develop searchable and filterable tools for cost-share programs, statewide events, producer networks, educational resources, and technical-support providers, including location-based discovery and streamlined content-submission and maintenance workflows. Students will gain hands-on experience with modern web application development, databases, search and filtering, geolocation and interactive mapping, APIs and potential external data integrations, GitHub, UX/UI design, and building a maintainable platform that helps Nebraska producers connect with programs, trusted advisors, resources, and opportunities relevant to their operations.

Students will expand Diesel Dash, the Nebraska Trucking Association's existing virtual reality workforce-development game that introduces students and the public to careers as diesel technicians. Building on the current truck-shop simulation, the team will add new challenges and deeper interactions within existing maintenance tasks, enhance scoring and user feedback, and improve the virtual shop environment to create a more authentic, engaging, and educational experience for school visits, career fairs, and public outreach events. Students will gain hands-on experience with Unity, Meta Horizon development, VR game design, immersive simulation, gamification, UX/UI, testing, and modular software development while helping the trucking industry inspire the next generation of diesel technicians.

Students will continue development of Know Your Well 4.0, a Progressive Web App that enables high school students and teachers to collect, manage, map, and analyze groundwater-quality data as part of a growing participatory science program. Building on three previous Senior Design teams, students will improve performance with multiple simultaneous users, expand login capabilities, enhance interactive mapping and water-quality visualization, and develop reporting tools for well owners. The project offers hands-on experience with React, Node.js, Express, JavaScript, SQL, Microsoft Azure, Azure Blob Storage, APIs, GitHub, Progressive Web App development, mapping/geolocation, data visualization, and offline data collection.

Students will develop Events Hub, an expansion of Nelnet's existing Storefront e-commerce platform that gives colleges and universities stronger tools for managing events as well as selling them. The team will build customizable event communications and reporting, an event-management dashboard, automated inventory restoration and waitlist notifications following refunds, and QR-code ticketing with mobile-camera attendance tracking. Students will gain hands-on experience developing plugins within an enterprise-scale platform using nopCommerce, .NET 9, ASP.NET Core, C#, Azure SQL Database, Razor, jQuery, Bootstrap, Docker, Microsoft Azure, and Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) while solving real-world e-commerce, event-management, and user-experience challenges.

The team will build a safe, containerized environment that simulates agricultural devices and networks, captures and analyzes security-related activity, and provides dashboards for visualizing potential cyber threats without connecting to or controlling actual agricultural equipment. Students will gain hands-on experience with cybersecurity, agricultural IoT/OT, Docker and containerization, network security, centralized logging, data visualization, dashboards, modern JavaScript/Next.js, and tools such as Elastic/OpenSearch and Grafana, with potential opportunities to explore SIEM integration and AI-supported cybersecurity.

Avian Acoustic Monitoring Network

Students will develop the first phase of an Avian Acoustic Monitoring Network, a software platform that transforms large volumes of bird-recording data into useful information for researchers, wildlife biologists, landowners, and conservation partners. The team will build a workflow for uploading and managing acoustic recordings, integrating BirdNET's AI-powered bird-call classification, validating species detections, visualizing results across monitoring sites, and generating reports and datasets for future ecological analysis. Students will gain hands-on experience with AI/deep-learning outputs, large-scale audio data, web application and dashboard development, databases, data visualization, AWS and UNL Holland Computing Center resources, BirdNET integration, and potential R integration.

Running Robots++

Students will continue development of Running Robot++, a multi-year robotics project that combines hardware, software, mobile development, and gaming to create interactive robot-based competitions inspired by laser tag and first-person shooter games. Building on previous Senior Design teams, students will complete a custom circuit board and can pursue features such as new game modes, VR/AR gameplay, laptop-based robot control, additional cameras and sensors, alternative robotic chassis, or programmable autonomous driving and targeting. Students will gain hands-on experience with Raspberry Pi, embedded systems and firmware, PCB design with KiCad, React Native, Android/iOS and web development, infrared communication, Bluetooth controllers, cameras and sensors, 3D printing, VR/AR, and robotics.

NeuroAdapt: An EEG-Driven Adaptive Virtual Reality System

Students will build NeuroAdapt, an adaptive virtual reality system that uses real-time brainwave data to recognize cognitive and emotional states such as focus, stress, fatigue, and relaxation, then dynamically adjusts the VR experience based on the user's state. The team will create an end-to-end system integrating EEG sensing, signal processing, machine learning classification, VR development, real-time data visualization, and session analytics, with potential applications in education, training, wellness, and productivity. Students will gain hands-on experience with EEG hardware such as Muse or OpenBCI, Meta Quest or similar VR technology, Unity, Python, TensorFlow or Scikit-learn, MySQL/PostgreSQL, machine learning, signal processing, dashboards, and human-computer interaction.

Students will develop a web-based presentation grading platform that helps instructors provide faster, more detailed feedback while spending less time taking notes during live student presentations. The system will integrate with Canvas to retrieve presentations and assignments, display slides alongside customizable grading and feedback tools, track presentation and slide timing, support feedback from multiple instructors, and streamline posting feedback back to Canvas. Students will gain hands-on experience with Python, Django, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML/CSS/SCSS, Canvas APIs, PDF.js, SQL databases, Linux, and GitLab, with opportunities to explore AI/LLMs, machine learning, image analysis, automated grammar checking, slide analysis, and AI-assisted feedback generation.

Students will continue development of Career Explore XR 2.0, an extended reality application that helps middle and high school students explore career opportunities through immersive, interactive experiences. Building on the existing application, which is already deployed across Meta Quest 3, iOS, Android, and the web, the team will create new career exploration activities focused on high-demand healthcare, skilled trades, and technology fields such as nursing, pharmacy technology, welding, automotive technology, software development, and automation and robotics. Students will gain hands-on experience with XR/VR development, Unity 3D, Meta Quest 3, cross-platform mobile and web development, 3D interactive environments, performance optimization, and GitHub.

Husker Heartbeat

Students will develop Husker Heartbeat, a wireless electrocardiogram (ECG) system that combines custom hardware with a cross-platform application for viewing, recording, and analyzing heart activity without being tethered to traditional monitoring equipment. The team will design a custom PCB and wireless hardware interface capable of receiving ECG signals and transmitting data via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or Wi-Fi to iOS, Android, and web applications, with potential integration with Apple and Samsung watches. Students will gain hands-on experience with embedded systems, PCB design using KiCad, ESP32 or similar microcontrollers, C/C++, BLE/Wi-Fi, signal processing, Ionic React, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, mobile and web development, and GitHub while building and integrating a complete hardware-and-software system.

Holographic-type video conferencing Systems Design

Students will continue development of a holographic-type video conferencing system designed to make remote communication more immersive by allowing participants to interact as full-sized 3D representations rather than traditional flat video images. Building on last year's prototype, the team will migrate the system from Microsoft HoloLens 2 to Meta Quest 3, develop wireless transmission of 3D holographic content, and use AI and filtering techniques to improve visual quality and realism. Students will gain hands-on experience with computer vision, deep learning, 3D reconstruction, wireless networking, mixed reality, Python, PyTorch, OpenCV, Open3D, Intel RealSense RGBD cameras, Unity, Meta XR SDK, GPU computing, and GitHub.

Computer vision-Based Detection of Adverse Weather and Road Conditions on the I-80 Corridor

Project Type: AI, Deep Learning, Computer Vision

Students will develop a computer vision and deep learning system that uses Nebraska Department of Transportation 511 camera footage to automatically identify adverse weather and roadway conditions along the I-80 corridor. The team will build and label an image/video dataset, train and evaluate models to classify conditions such as dry, wet, snowy, or icy pavement and reduced visibility, and explore opportunities for real-time analysis of live camera streams. Students will gain hands-on experience with computer vision, AI/deep learning, Python, TensorFlow or PyTorch, convolutional neural networks or vision transformers, image/video processing, data annotation tools such as LabelImg or Roboflow, model evaluation, GitHub, and high-performance computing while applying AI to a real-world transportation safety challenge.

Holland Computing Center - MCP Server for HPC Workloads

Students will develop a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that connects AI agents with UNL's Holland Computing Center high-performance computing (HPC) resources, making it easier for researchers to run computational workloads without manually navigating complex command-line processes. The team will build tools that allow AI agents to query HPC documentation, create and submit Slurm jobs, monitor job status and logs, and manage workloads while incorporating authentication, resource limits, dry-run capabilities, and human approval safeguards. Students will gain hands-on experience with AI agents and LLMs, Model Context Protocol (MCP), Python, Linux, high-performance computing, Slurm, SSH, APIs/tool interfaces, authentication and security, GitHub, pytest, and CI/CD while developing and testing the system against a live HCC computing cluster.

Accessible VR Protein Space with LLM and Voice Interaction

Students will enhance an existing virtual reality protein exploration platform by integrating large language models (LLMs), voice interaction, and accessibility features to make complex scientific visualization more intuitive and inclusive. The team will develop a conversational assistant that allows users to navigate the VR environment, explore protein data, ask natural-language questions, receive spoken explanations, and interact through hands-free voice commands, with special attention to users with visual, motor, or learning differences. Students will gain hands-on experience with LLMs and AI APIs, voice/speech technologies, VR/XR, WebXR/A-Frame, Python, Django, MySQL, HTML, AWS, GitHub, Apple Vision Pro, and Meta Quest 3 while working at the intersection of AI, immersive computing, accessibility, human-computer interaction, and bioinformatics.

Heart and Seek: Cardiovascular Medication Escape Room

Students will develop Heart and Seek, an immersive virtual reality escape-room game designed to help nursing students and healthcare professionals learn about cardiovascular medications through interactive puzzles and challenges. Working with UNMC College of Nursing faculty, the team will transform clinical concepts involving medication classes such as beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE/ARBs, anticoagulants, diuretics, and vasodilators into engaging game-based learning experiences that reinforce medication knowledge and patient safety. Students will gain hands-on experience with VR/XR development, Meta Quest headsets, interactive game design, immersive simulation, UX/UI, and educational technology, with the goal of creating an application that can be used in nursing education and potentially published through SideQuest, itch.io, and the Meta app store.
